A Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book accommodation after getting there, but once I got there, a major event was taking place and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could bed down in the terminal – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, believing I could pass the night in an establishment that was open 24/7. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next day, but as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more people who show such kindness.
I must have looked confused as a woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted my situation and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered a meal: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her evening job. I had access to warm shower facilities and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she undertook as a young woman inviting a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain very grateful.
I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of human compassion. I hope the universe has repaid her act of kindness many times over. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
