Condemnation Erupts as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Criticism
Personalities from across the political aisle and the entertainment industry are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a vile and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Party
A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the statements.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of a different political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
