During his initial presidency, commentators often suggested that the former president's remarks should be taken seriously rather than literally. Yet, subsequent events indicate that that formula may have reversed the logic.

An emergent American strategic document coupled with a series of statements from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have precipitated potentially one of the most profound crises for transatlantic unity, the doctrine that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since World War II.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas Trump's earlier critique focused on Europe's perceived refusal to fund its own defense, his vision has now evolved into a significantly more disturbing perspective.

Tinged with racism and a staggering disdain for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the potential of societal collapse on a continent he barely knows and has predominantly seen from a distance.

A conspiratorial worldview, which has shaped contentious U.S. immigration and policing policies, now appears to be shaping Washington's prism of Europe.

A Xenophobic Thesis

From this vantage point, immigration from developing nations causes a cultural dilution of European countries, rendering them "feeble" under "foolish" leadership and setting the stage for their eventual decline. This is an unabashedly xenophobic ideology, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right political parties across Europe.

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is not new, its specific implications for European security are critically important.

For Trump and his adherents—a group that includes billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all statecraft is fundamentally a deal. But, whereas the previous argument was about financial fairness, the new claim is that a decadent Europe is undeserving because of its shift toward multiculturalism.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump joins these ideas in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a divided Europe. Trump then declares Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the rifts in Washington and European capitals, he objectively helps Putin by further weakening European cohesion—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most consequential juncture for Europe in decades, with a devastating war in Ukraine and escalating Russian-hostile actions elsewhere on the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Ukraine facing continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a justifying narrative for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

This situation demands a robust response from capitals across Europe. Although certain leaders, such as Germany's leader, have been forceful in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

Recently, the UK government refused to criticize the president's remarks about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

They said, "He has a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on cooperating with each to deliver better outcomes for the British public."

The stark reality is that Trump means his words and says them repeatedly. The time has come to abandon the pretense that things are different.
