  • The home side were previously qualified to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Forward nets again with a sharp finish in the second half.
  • The midfielder caps a excellent display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the Europa League with a convincing win against their Hungarian visitors at the City Ground.

Forest had previously guaranteed a berth in the next qualifying round and entered this game with a slim possibility of making the league's elite, although they required other matches to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this assured display will give Forest fans belief that their team can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the round of sixteen.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a header inside the opening stages for the visitors – who are managed by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

Forest broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by Bence Otvos and doubled the lead four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his tenth strike of the season.

Jesus' eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the backline and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest scored again when the excellent McAtee scored from a penalty after a foul by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League qualifying round draw takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a good step."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in Europe this season with six of his 11 goals scored in the Europa League.

This double also means he has scored three goals in his previous two outings and the prospect of competition for his position in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently signed on loan and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was outstanding against the opposition, delivering two superb finishes and overall being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

The forward was not alone in catching the eye, with McAtee turning in his best performance in a Forest jersey since signing from Manchester City last summer, while the Swiss international also impressed.

Such positive showings will give Forest some renewed optimism as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the bottom three when they welcome their London rivals on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," continued Dyche.

"I have always trusted their commitment or their dedication or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Igor got another two and these are positive indicators."
