Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
