Israelis commemorate second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' representatives met in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A senior representative familiar with the talks revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- Future management of the area
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose brother survived the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place feels like home now and until each abducted person come back no one will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Protester one woman explained: "We must do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israelis prefer the hostilities to conclude in return for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, area and zone areas and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the evening arrives, the fear comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of six people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated two more victims had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medics stated.
The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
