Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
