Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its representatives accompanied members of Hamas into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by Israeli military control to support the hunt for the remains of individuals held captive.

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to return the remains of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has consented to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has to date returned the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those bodies are believed to be in areas beyond the yellow line marking the temporary truce line.

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the group searched for the remains of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” stated a representative for the organization.

She added: “Those involved to the hostilities determined the modalities of the mission and delegated the Red Cross to act as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in the discussions.”

She further explained: “Our team was did not participate in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it engage in the retrieval of remains.”

Efforts to locate for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most delicate matters in the ceasefire reached between the two sides.
