As I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
