The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Total Trust' in Teenager Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight berth.
At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's renowned youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.
After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Manchester.
